About this photograph

I photographed this sunrise from the long sandy beach at Marina di Pisticci on Italy’s Ionian coast. The sea was almost calm, with only small waves reaching the shore, while the clouds above the horizon gradually filled with shades of pink, violet and warm orange. At this early hour, before the beach became busy, the coastline felt quiet and almost completely empty.
