About this photograph

I photographed Podere Belvedere shortly after sunrise, when the first warm light began to move across the rolling hills of Val d’Orcia. For a few moments, the farmhouse and its cypress trees were illuminated while much of the surrounding countryside remained in soft shadow. The yellow spring flowers in the foreground completed one of those unmistakable Tuscan scenes that make the early start worthwhile.
